Dr Marc Owens BA (Hons), MSc, PhD is a leading expert on teamwork in remote and hybrid working environments. Awarded his PhD in 2025 from Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University, Marc spent 5 years researching teaming and technology-mediated interactions, uncovering new insights into how people collaborate and navigate disruptions to achieve their goals.

In a career spanning multiple sectors, including manufacturing, marketing, local and national government, non-profit, higher education, and more, Marc has held senior positions and understands what c-suite and managers need from their teams to succeed. In recent years, much of his work has focused on technology innovation, adoption, change management, and strategy design and implementation.

Marc’s interest in teaming and internal communications was sparked in 2017 whilst working for one of the world’s largest engine manufactures, observing a reliance on email and instant messaging for remote collaboration, and the disruptions that followed when over-used. Since then, he has undertaken two distinct research projects.

Pushing the boundaries of Business Studies, Marc collected a corpus of over 27 hours of video-recorded online business meetings and applied multimodal conversation analysis, uncovering how individuals socially construct their shared interactional environments, how they collaboratively work through troubles, and how they value technology within their interactions.
